Original Lyrics

Woo, stomp me, gimme your love!

Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love

Amusement
Ah, blue love…tell me!

Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love

Ah, blue love…tell me!

Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love

Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Foxy blue love Foxy blue love
Tell me, tell me!

Translated Lyrics

Woo, stomp me, gimme your love!

Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
One of betrayl and defeat
Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
A foxy blue love that’s going to break

“Well, today’s goodbye. Will we see each other tomorrow?”
An amusement that’s brittle and fleeting, like it’s been frozen in a basement
A drop of water from an Acacia, my love singing a cappella
I want a key that can open the door back to a more cynical time
Don’t put this illusory moment to an end, my queen
With a secret feeling; Ah, blue love…tell me!

Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
One of betrayl and defeat
Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
A foxy blue love that’s going to break

A midnight bargain, screaming and beside myself
I couldn’t see you, and I couldn’t sleep at night
Platinum tears, platonic sighs
I want nights and dreams full of secrets
This moment of happiness; Don’t leave, my queen
Using your mysterious fingertips, ah, blue love…tell me!

Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
One of betrayl and defeat
Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
A foxy blue love that’s going to break

Kill off your individuality, put on a mask and close your disdainful eyes
Your beautifully mad and defected partner in crime will always be by your side!

Blinded by our refrain, I can’t see or be seen
So then it’s goodbye, so let’s embrace the thorns and melt together here tomorrow

Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
One of betrayl and defeat
Foxy blue love, foxy blue love
It’s going to break, but don’t worry about it
Tell me, tell me!

Notes

Foxy Blue Love - Chorus 2 (Experience Movie Tour)
Emma and Heesey singing backup for the chorus (Experience Movie Tour, 1993)

Foxy Blue Love falls into the same boat as other songs on this album like Subjective Late Show and Oh! Golden Boys: It’s a good and upbeat song musically where the lyrics just aren’t particularly interesting. I’d even argue that this is the least interesting song lyrically that we’ve seen on the album so far. They aren’t particularly bad, there’s just nothing more to them than the story of a relationship that started out revolving around S&M (See the “stomp me” in the intro and referring to the other party here as “Queen”) but turned into something more for the speaker. The phrase “Foxy Blue Love” is kind of neat in a 70s sort of way, and the song picks up both lyrically and further musically during the bridge going into the last chorus, but that just isn’t enough. My guess is that this is Yoshii writing a character and he isn’t actually masochistic, but you never know!

Foxy Blue Love - Yoshii Before Chorus (Experience Movie Tour)
Yoshii with a particularly aggressive looking “Tell me!” just before the chorus (Experience Movie Tour, 1993)

It’s interesting that this happened to be the song that they experimented with mixing to sound like a Nirvana song might (presumably a lot more dirty sounding). I ultimately feel that Yoshii probably made the right decision to abandon that idea and mix it the way they did, but it would be interesting to hear what that would have sounded like.

For that first album we stayed in Kawaguchiko for recording and then went back to Tokyo. But that was also the day that Nirvana’s “Nevermind” came out. So the recording engineer bought it and brought it back with him, and we listened to it on cassette. I couldn’t get over how amazing it sounded. I couldn’t stop thinking “How did they get this sound!?”, because it was unlike anything I’d ever heard. So “Foxy Blue Love” was the first song that the recording engineer started on during mixing, and he made it sound like Nirvana! But I listened to it and said “I’m sorry, let’s just give up. This is great, but it’s just not right”. Then I played a Finger 5 CD for him and said “Please try to make it sound something like this”. Then I played him Pink Lady or something and said “Give the snare drum a thick sound, like this”. A nice thick analog sound like The Sweet had. I told him “Something that sounds like it was from ’75 or ’76 would be nice”, but then it turned into a little bit of a disagreement. The recording engineer was worried, but he went along with it. I was probably trying to revive “Yoake no Scat” (“Dawn Scat”), and all the music I listened to when I was a kid right then and there. It’s the foundation of why I make music, after all. I want people to hear something that has a cool sound to it.

Foxy Blue Love - Yoshii (Promo Video)
Foxy Blue Love from a promo video issued around the time of Yemon being signed

It’s hard to tell whether this song existed during their indie days or not. It was featured on some sort of promotional video tape of theirs that circulated when they were signed (according to footage found on the Mekara Uroko 20 2016 ver. TV special). As far as recorded performances of it go, it seems to have only been played during their Experience Movie tour (1993) and at Mekara Uroko 7 (though only on the extended cut, found in the expensive Mekara Uroko box set), 9 and 10 (1996, 1998 and 1999 respectively, all concerts focused around playing older material). All performances feature Yoshii on acoustic guitar.
