WELCOME TO MY DOGHOUSE

  • Lyrics & Music: Kazuya Yoshii
  • Arrangement: The Yellow Monkey

Original Lyrics

Stardust silver night
Je t’aime Je t’aime Je t’aime
I miss you baby

Stardust silver night
Je t’aime Je t’aime Je t’aime

Welcome to my doghouse
Welcome to my doghouse
I miss you baby

Welcome to my doghouse
Welcome to my doghouse Baby
Welcome to my doghouse
Welcome to my doghouse

I miss you baby

Help me, It’s no game, Wake up, Yeah!

Translated Lyrics

Welcome to a tent that houses a dark show
Put on by a clown that seems so colorful

Gouge out your eyes and take a look
At the sorrowful stardust silver night
Your pitying voice
Makes me suffer, makes me scared, but I love you, I love you, I love you
I miss you baby

Whenever I want to bark
There’s the musky scent of your wrist……

When I explore this smooth desert
I find a stardust silver night
And when it all gushes forth from that red jewel
I feel so faint; I love you, I love you, I love you

Welcome to my doghouse, hurry up and get this chain off
Welcome to my doghouse, from around my neck
I miss you baby

Seeing just how wretched I am
How much more of this can you stand?

Welcome to my doghouse, hurry up and get this chain off
Welcome to my doghouse baby, from around my neck
Welcome to my doghouse, what color is the sky right now?
Welcome to my doghouse, I just want to get out of here!

I miss you baby

Help me, it’s no game, wake up, yeah!

Notes

Welcome To My Doghouse - Welcome Shout
Yoshii’s “Welcome!” shout (Super Japan Tour 2016, Saitama)

This is an unusual set of Yemon lyrics because they’re completely from the perspective of a victim. It’s not clear to what extent the obvious S&M that’s going on here is consensual, but there’s clearly some amount of willingness (or at least Stockholm Syndrome) given lines like “I miss you baby” and “Je t’aime”. The “smooth desert” verse is clearly describing the act of exploring the female body, so it should be obvious as to what the “red jewel” that “gushes” is. The verb “masaguru” that’s used here describes the act of groping or fumbling, which adds a feeling of clumsiness or inexperience.

Jaguar Hard Pain live, 1994

This ended up being one of the only songs from this album that Yemon played live throughout their career with any regularity. They’d typically use it during encores, and even ended their “last live” (Mekara Ukuro 8) with it (poetically making it their first and last song, in a way). Yoshii will typically say something and then shout “Welcome!” before going into this song, and embellishes it with howling during the transition into the final chorus. The 2013 compilation “Yemon -FAN’S BEST SELECTION-” features a newly remastered version of this song, though it doesn’t really do much for such an old recording. A newly recorded version can be found on the 2017 compilation of re-recorded hits “The Yellow Monkey Is Here. New Best”. Largely due to the much greater quality of the new recording, it’s probably the definitive version of this song.

Unfortunately, whatever Yoshii shouts at the beginning and just before the final chorus don’t appear in the lyrics and aren’t very distinguishable. I wasn’t even able to find any guesses as to what they may be.

Welcome To My Doghouse - Tokyo Dome Live
Tokyo Dome Live, 2001

The last song that we performed during the encore of our Tokyo Dome concert before we halted activity as a band was “Welcome To My Doghouse”. It was like the desire to improve by getting to the other side of my sense of being a victim and my ill will toward society and others just exploded. Though those that I’d blame for that change on a case by case basis. At that point it was just me asserting myself though, saying “I can write something like this too!”.

So the guy who made that assertion and wrote “Welcome To My Doghouse” continued on, asking all the while “Do you know why I wrote this song?!”, and took the fans along with him. Because I was responsible for planting the seed that “Welcome To My Doghouse” was such an important song for those who had been fans since “Taiyou ga Moeteiru”, I felt I had to end it with that song.
